What I Put In My Coffee (Theanine, Collagen, & More)Jan 28, 2020
Lately, I’ve been getting a lot of questions about what I put in my coffee in the morning (and why).
So, I figured I’d lay everything out for you in this post.
First, the actual coffee I drink... Purity
Purity Coffee is the highest quality coffee I’ve found on the market thus far. It’s 100% organic, antioxidant-rich, and tested to ensure it’s free of mold and mycotoxins. Coffee can actually have great health benefits, but if you’re drinking stuff that’s been sitting in a can for ages and sprayed with a bunch of pesticides, you’re basically just consuming moldy, chemically enriched hot water 🤢

Add L-Theanine to Coffee
L-Theanine is an amino acid extracted from the leaves of camellias sinensis (fancy name for a tea plant). By itself, l-theanine is an effective nootropic (cognitive enhancer) that also has been shown to alleviate stress and promote a calm, focused, regulated mood.
When combined with caffeine, there seems to be a pronounced synergistic effect. This means you can experience heightened focus, awareness, and energy while also reducing some of the negative effects that come along with caffeine (such as the ‘jitters’).
Putting Collagen Peptides in Coffee
Collagen protein makes up about 90% of our connective tissue (joints, ligaments, tendons, fascia) as well as our skin and bones. As we age, our body slows the production of collagen.
Unlike our ancestors who were consuming nose-to-tail animal foods, most of us are probably deficient in the amino acids that come from collagen-rich foods, specifically glycine. Not enough glycine = you’re more prone to soft tissue injuries and lower production of glutathione, the most important anti-oxidant in your body!
If you’re not consuming collagen-rich foods on the daily (I.e., REAL bone broth, fish like sardines and mackerel - you can actually eat their bones, egg yolks/eggshells) then supplementing with collagen might be something to look into 💪🏻
Also, if you’re eating a lot of meat (which you should be cuz #gains), supplementing with collagen can help balance out the ratio of glycine to methionine, the main amino acid in muscle meat.

MCT Powder in Coffee (Not Pictured)
When I'm not using SuperCoffee Creamer (or when I'm traveling and can't take it with me), I usually add MCT Powder to my coffee instead.
MCT's (or Medium-Chain Triglycerides) are a unique type of fatty acid extracted mainly from coconut oil. Because MCTs are absorbed and broken down quickly in your body, they are a great source of immediate energy and in particular, help support mental clarity and sharpness.
MCT powder is manufactured from MCT oil using a process called spray drying. I like the powder better than the oil because it tends to have fewer digestive side-effects, is more portable, adds great flavor (if you use a flavored version), and is more versatile for mixing and cooking.
Make sure you pay attention to the label and list of ingredients any time you shop for an MCT powder (or any supplement for that matter) because a lot of the ones on the market are loaded with chemical additives and fillers. My personal favorite is listed below.
Salt & Cinnamon
I also add a dash of both high-quality salt and cinnamon to my coffee. Coffee is a diuretic and can cause dehydration if you drink a lot of it. Adding a dash of high-quality salt can help alleviate this by ensuring you're getting a dose of electrolytes. I add the cinnamon because I love the flavor.
